Chemical peels (often called “chemosurgery”) can be used by Dr. Chiaramonte and Dr. Costeloe to eliminate the top parts of areas of skin that have been damaged by age, sun exposure, or other natural factors. The skin will heal and generate new cells, a process that produces a firmer and younger-appearing countenance.
For exfoliation that is slightly deeper than a topical cream, many dermatologists recommend a chemical peel. It can improve many skin problems, such as acne and sun damage. Chemical peels can also stimulate collagen, thereby reducing mild acne scarring and actually tightening the skin. This non-invasive procedure has proven very effective in helping lined, UV-affected, and aged skin. It can be given to your whole facial area or to just certain locations, such as your mouth or brow. Dr. C and staff are awesome. Have recommended him to anyone who knows my path and asks about it. It’s the only place I would go to for any of the services offered.

There isn’t much downtime in terms of recovery from our chemical peel treatments in Maryland and DC. However, you may want to take a few days away from work and social engagements. This will depend on the type of peel that you select. If you choose to have the lightest chemical peel, you can go right back to your normal activities, minus getting sun exposure. If you choose a medium-grade peel, you may be advised to stay out of the sun as well as the gym. Exercise, or any physical activity, that causes you to sweat can irritate the skin. While your skin is actively peeling, you may need to avoid potentially harsh topical products, such as retinol and certain acids. Your provider will advise you regarding aftercare based on your unique peel.
The amount of peeling you experience will depend on the depth of your peel. Light chemical peels may not cause any peeling at all. Your skin might feel slightly rough and you may notice some flaking. This doesn’t mean that your peel isn’t working. You’ll still benefit, regardless. In general, the deeper the treatment, the more peeling you can expect. It’s important to follow your aftercare instructions and not rub or pull on the peeling areas. Allowing the skin to slough off naturally will yield the best results with the least amount of irritation.
We want you to achieve the best results with minimal side effects.
