Nose surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis in Maryland and DC under IV sedation. How long the operation takes depends on the complexity of your surgery.

Based on your needs and goals, Dr. Chiaramonte and Dr. Costeloe may recommend one of the following techniques for your nose surgery:

• Open rhinoplasty – An incision is made across the columella (soft tissue between the nostrils). Bone, soft tissue and cartilage is reshaped to achieve your desired appearance.
• Closed rhinoplasty – All incisions are made inside the nostrils. Bone, soft tissue and cartilage is reshaped to achieve your desired appearance.
• Limited rhinoplasty or tip-plasty – This technique is ideal if you are strictly looking to change the appearance of the tip of your nose.
• Nostril reduction – This procedure is performed to reduce the size of nostrils that are very large or flared out. Our surgeons can perform nostril reduction using either an open or closed technique.
• Revision rhinoplasty – This is if you have had previous nose surgery.

What Is the Recovery after Nose Surgery?

Our providers will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions. It’s important that you follow these very carefully to ensure proper healing and the best possible results.

Make sure you arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery since you will still be experiencing the lingering effects of anesthesia. Drink plenty of fluids and get a lot of rest for the remainder of the day. We also recommend that you have someone around the house to assist you during the first day of your recovery.

You should expect some discomfort after rhinoplasty surgery in Maryland and DC, but this can be alleviated with cold compresses and pain medications prescribed by Dr. Chiaramonte and Dr. Costeloe. There will be light swelling and bruising around the eyes, which will gradually subside over the first two weeks of recovery.

Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping surgery, requires a significant healing period. Here’s a brief overview of what you can expect:

Week 1: In the first week following surgery, you’ll likely have a nasal splint or cast to protect and support your nose. You may experience swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort. Six to seven days after surgery I remove the cast and sutures.

Week 2: By the end of the second week, the bruising and swelling will improve enough to where an observer would not know you had rhinoplasty surgery.

3 months: By this time about 80% of the swelling will resolve and you’ll start to see the new shape of your nose more clearly.

Months 4-12: The healing process continues during this period, with the residual 20% of the swelling slowly disappearing during this time. Your nose will gradually refine, and the final shape will become apparent. It’s important to protect your nose from injury during this time.
