Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon in National Harbor Accepting New Patients Near Washington DC, Arlington, Fort Washington, Maryland & Virginia
Sometimes even the most diligent diet and exercise efforts aren’t enough to deliver the beautiful figure you desire. It’s common for unwanted areas of fat to remain even when you eat well and exercise regularly.
The unfortunate truth is that genetics also play an important role in your body type. We’re all predisposed to store fat in certain areas of the body, and these stubborn pockets of fat often accumulate in undesired places. If you’re looking to address these stubborn fat deposits around your body, liposuction may be the perfect solution for you.

What areas of the body can Liposuction Treat?
Liposuction can be performed to remove excess fat deposits in many different areas of the body. By improving your body’s contours and proportions, liposuction can have a dramatic effect on your appearance, helping you look and feel your best.
Dr. Chiaramonte regularly uses liposuction to eliminate unwanted fat in the following areas of the body:
- Flanks (to eliminate the appearance of “muffin tops” or “love handles”)
- Chest (as part of a male breast reduction procedure)
- Face, neck and jowls
- Calves and ankles
- Upper arms
In many instances, Dr. Chiaramonte will include liposuction as part of a mommy makeover in order to help you get rid of stubborn baby fat and restore your pre-pregnancy figure.
What Are The Benefits of Liposuction?
Many men and women who undergo liposuction at Bella Cosmetic Surgery find that their procedure is a life-changing experience. You’ll receive many benefits from liposuction, including:
- More balanced and proportional figure
- Better tone and definition in the treatment region
- Increased self-confidence
- Improved appearance in swimsuits and clothing
The desire to maintain beautiful, long lasting results often provides patients with increased motivation to live an active, healthy lifestyle after liposuction. Not only will these lifestyle changes help you look your best, but they also provide far-reaching health benefits as you get older.
Am I a Candidate for Liposuction?
While liposuction is a great way to eliminate stubborn areas of fat, not everyone is a candidate for this procedure. It’s important to know that liposuction is not intended as a weight loss treatment, and that you must be at or near a healthy, stable weight to be considered a candidate. Therefore, you’ll need to achieve any weight loss goals before undergoing liposuction.
In addition, good liposuction candidates are men and women who:
- Exercise regularly and are physically fit
- Have firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone
- Have one or more localized areas of fat they’d like to eliminate
- Are healthy with no medical conditions or illnesses
- Do not smoke or are willing to quit smoking prior to surgery and throughout the recovery period
- Have healthy, positive, and realistic expectations for their goals
How Is The Liposuction Procedure Performed?
Liposuction is performed on an outpatient basis, allowing you to start your recovery from the comfort of your own home the day of your procedure. The amount of time required to complete your procedure will depend on the number and location of treatment areas as well as how much fat is being removed.
To minimize discomfort, anesthesia is administered prior to your procedure. Dr. Chiaramonte will discuss your anesthesia options with you before surgery to determine the right one for you. These options include:
- General anesthesia
- Intravenous sedation
- Local anesthesia
Dr. Chiaramonte will then make a tiny incision in the area where fat will be removed. A tumescent solution comprised of adrenaline, lidocaine and epinephrine will be injected into the region. This will help break up the fat, reduce bleeding, minimize bruising and deliver a localized anesthetic to the area being treated. A hollow, slender tube, called a cannula, will be used to remove the unwanted fat deposits using a suction process.
What Is Recovery After Liposuction Like?
Due to the lingering effects of the anesthesia, you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery. You should also plan on having someone stay at home with you for the rest of the day to assist you and make sure your recovery is starting smoothly. Plan on getting plenty of rest for the remainder of the day, and drink lots of fluids to avoid dehydration.
You may experience mild swelling and bruising after surgery which will gradually subside over the first 2-4 weeks of recovery. During this time, you will need to wear a compression garment or elastic bands over the treatment areas to help control the swelling and hold your skin to its new contours.
Pain after liposuction is generally mild. Dr. Chiaramonte will prescribe medication to help with any discomfort you feel during the initial phase of recovery. You will have a follow-up visit with Dr. Chiaramonte several days after surgery so that he can monitor your recovery. You should be able to return to work after about a week, but the exact timeframe will depend on how quickly you heal.
How Soon After Liposuction Can I Excercise?
While you will need to get plenty of rest after surgery, you are encouraged to begin light walking as soon as you can. This will facilitate proper blood flow and reduce your risk of issues such as blood clots. Over the first two weeks of recovery, you will be able to gradually increase your activity level. In most instances, it will be safe to participate in most routine daily activities after about two weeks.
While you will most likely want to start exercising again as soon as possible in order to maintain your results, it’s important to be patient. You’ll need to avoid exercise and most strenuous activities for approximately 4-6 weeks to prevent complications with healing and recovery. Dr. Chiaramonte will let you know when it is safe to resume exercise and other strenuous activities.
What Can I Expect From My Liposuction Results?
As with resuming exercise, you will need to be patient regarding your liposuction results. You should start to see some initial results after a few weeks, and these will continue to improve as swelling subsides. It may take 3-4 months before you are able to enjoy your final outcome.
Once fat cells are removed, they will never regenerate. In this regard, your liposuction results are permanent. However, you can still gain weight after your procedure if you fail to live a healthy lifestyle. If this occurs, the weight you gain will be dispersed throughout your remaining fat cells. Often, this can lead to weight gain in unexpected areas, and you may discover that your figure no longer has the proper balance and proportion achieved after liposuction.
For this reason, it’s crucial that you commit to a lifestyle that includes a healthy diet and frequent exercise. This is the only way to ensure your liposuction results will last a long time. If you’re unsure of the lifestyle changes you need to make, we recommend working with a nutritionist and/or a personal trainer who can help put you on the path towards living healthy.
Transform Your Midsection with a Bella Body Lift
At Bella Cosmetic surgery, we understand that everyone’s situation is different, and that liposuction alone may not be enough to deliver the results you desire. For individuals looking to achieve a significant improvement in the abdominal region, we offer the Bella Body Lift. This procedure combines liposuction with a tummy tuck for dramatic results.
This special treatment is a transformative procedure for your entire midsection. Unlike a tummy tuck alone or liposuction for your lower body, the Bella Body Lift focuses on your midsection by combining the two procedures into one and completing them both at once. Just like the tummy tuck and liposuction procedures, the best candidates for our Bella Body Lift are men and women who are relatively fit, healthy and close to their ideal body weight.
How much does Liposuction Cost?
At Bella Cosmetic Surgery, liposuction treatment begins at $4,300. However, the actual price of your procedure will depend on:
- The area(s) being treated
- How much fat is being removed
- The type of anesthesia used
- Outpatient facility fees
If you are undergoing other procedures at the same time, such as with a Bella Body Lift or a mommy makeover, this will also impact the price of your procedure. During your initial consultation, our staff will be able to provide you with a more precise estimate regarding the cost of your liposuction procedure.
Dr. Chiaramonte is committed to making sure your liposuction procedure can fit into your budget. In order to achieve this goal, we offer a variety of financing options, including no-interest and low-interest plans. Our staff can review these financing plans with you in detail in order to help you determine the right option for your budget.
