The method of elimination used will depend on the stage and extent of your weight loss. Shortly after bariatric surgery, the excess skin may simply be excised during a procedure that is called a panniculectomy. Patients with a large amount of specifically local skin surplus who must do away with more of their excess weight are usually the best candidates for this procedure.

If your current weight is more in line with your goal, a more involved and intricate procedure called an abdominoplasty may be performed. This procedure removes extra skin between the belly button to the pubic area. The abdominal muscles must also be repositioned and tightened. Abdominoplasty also may be combined with liposuction of the upper midsection in a lipoabdominoplasty procedure that Dr. Chiaramonte calls the Bella Body Lift.

In cases of more dramatic loss of weight and resulting skin sag, the excess appears not just in the abdomen but also can affect the hip and back area; this situation calls for a circumferential abdominoplasty to present the most appealing contour. An even more involved form of a circumferential abdominoplasty known as a “body lift” may be done to lift the thigh and buttock region and encourage the shape that you desire.
