Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon in National Harbor Accepting New Patients Near Washington DC, Arlington, Fort Washington, Maryland & Virginia
There are very few experiences in life as rewarding, or as challenging, as motherhood. Raising children requires a great deal of hard work and sacrifice, and you'll often find that you must put their needs in front of yours. While these sacrifices are well worth the effort, they can often take a toll on your body as you neglect your own sleep, nutrition and exercise to make sure your children have what they need.
The sacrifices you make in your daily life will compound the impact to your body caused by pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding, making it much more challenging to find the time and energy necessary to restore the figure you enjoyed prior to having children. If you've struggled to regain your pre-pregnancy figure, a mommy makeover may be an excellent option for you.
At Bella Cosmetic Surgery, we can create a customized mommy makeover plan that will help you counteract the effects pregnancy and childbirth have on your body. You can learn about your options and receive individualized treatment recommendations by speaking with Dr. Michael Chiaramonte in person. Please call 301-567-6767 today to schedule a consultation. We serve patients in Maryland, Washington DC and Northern Virginia.
What is a Mommy Makeover?
Your body typically undergoes many changes as a result of pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding:
- Abdominal muscles my become stretched and in some instances may even tear
- You may have excess skin and fat in the abdominal region
- Stretch marks may develop around your abdomen or on your breasts
- Breasts may lose volume and start to sag
- Weight gained during pregnancy, often referred to as "baby weight," may be difficult to lose after childbirth
A mommy makeover consists of a series of plastic surgery procedures performed to help you counteract these changes to your body and restore your pre-pregnancy figure. Depending on your unique needs and goals, Dr. Chiaramonte may recommend a one or more of the following procedures as part of your mommy makeover:
By combining these procedures into one operation, a mommy makeover helps reduce downtime and minimize the recovery period, which is essential for a busy mother with a multitude of responsibilities associated with raising young children.
Am I a Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?
In general, ideal candidates for a mommy makeover:
- Are in good overall health
- Have realistic expectations for the outcome of their procedure
- Are near their ideal weight
- Have made a diligent effort to restore their pre-pregnancy figure by eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly
- Are finished having children (future pregnancies can adversely impact mommy makeover results)
- Do not smoke or are willing to quit smoking prior to the procedure and throughout the recovery period
- Are prepared to undergo a complex surgical procedure that may require extensive downtime during the recovery period
- Are committed to diligently following Dr. Chiaramonte's post-operative instructions to ensure proper healing
It's important to understand that you will have some physical limitations immediately following your mommy makeover. You will be limited in your ability to lift heavy objects for awhile, and you must gradually resume normal activities as your body is capable of handling this stress. If you have very young children, you may want to arrange for someone to help you with everyday household tasks for the first few weeks of your recovery.
What Types of Breast Implants Are Used in Mommy Makeovers?
Breast augmentation is a standard procedure in the mommy makeover treatment. The types of implants that may be used include:
Saline breast implants - Filled with sterile salt water, this FDA-approved implant provides firmness and allows the body to naturally absorb and expel its ingredients if a rupture were to occur.
Silicone breast implants - Filled with silicone gel, this FDA-approved implant mimics the natural feel of breast tissue and will not collapse in the case of implant leakage.
Gummy bear breast implants - These implants maintain their shape with silicone gel that is more projected at the bottom and tapered at the top to mimic the natural shape of a breast.
Round breast implants - These implants maintain a round shape and are great for filling volume and preventing complications if rotation occurs.
Smooth breast implants - As the softest feeling implants, these implants can move within the breast implant pocket, allowing for easy, natural flexibility and movement.
Textured breast implants - These implants have the ability to develop scar tissue, allowing for security and minimizing movement and repositioning within the breast pocket.
Depending on the type of look and overall goals you would like to achieve with breast augmentation, certain types of implants may be better for you than others. During your consultation, one of our board-certified plastic surgeons will meet with you to discuss the best option for you.
What Is the Difference Between a Submuscular and Subglandular Breast Implant Placement?
Subglandular implants are placed just behind the glands of the breast, while submuscular implants are inserted behind the muscular wall of the chest instead. Although neither type of implant is necessarily better than the other, each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
For example, submuscular implants may make mammograms easier, as well as a more natural appearance, especially if you want larger implants. However, subglandular implants help preserve the muscle structure of the chest wall. Ask your doctor whether one type is a better option for your unique needs.
Can I Have a Mommy Makeover If I’m Breastfeeding?
Generally speaking, it’s recommended that you finish breastfeeding, as well as wait an additional three to six months or more, before pursuing a mommy makeover. This gives your breasts and body a chance to adjust and become ready for surgery and recovery.
Can I Have More Kids After My Mommy Makeover?
You absolutely can have more kids after Mommy Makeover treatment. It is perfectly safe to do so. That said, there is a very real risk to your results. Becoming pregnant after procedures like liposuction and a tummy tuck, your midsection could stretch to the point at which your abdominal muscles separate or loosen. The weight gain that occurs during pregnancy, whether or not you breastfeed, can cause the results of breast augmentation or a breast lift to degrade. It is because of risks like these that doctors generally do not perform Mommy Makeover treatment on patients who may still become pregnant in the future.
Will a Cesarean Section or Hysterectomy Affect Mommy Makeover Results?
Having had a C-section or hysterectomy should not exclude you from being a good candidate for a Mommy Makeover. Dr. Chiaramonte routinely performs various body and breast procedures on women who have had at least one, if not both, of these necessary surgeries. When you attend your consultation for a Mommy Makeover, it is important that you disclose your previous surgeries, as well as any complications that you experienced during or after these procedures. This will enable the doctor to adequately plan your safest and most rewarding Mommy Makeover.
What Are the Risks of Mommy Makeover Surgery?
A Mommy Makeover is a comprehensive treatment process that can address two or more areas of your body in one event. Each of the techniques that are involved in the overall procedure carries some risk. The risks associated with Mommy Makeover procedures include the following:
- Anesthesia risks
- Bleeding or blood accumulation beneath the skin
- Fluid accumulation beneath the skin
- Poor wound healing
- Asymmetry or poor aesthetic outcome
- Persistent pain or numbness
- Changes in skin sensation
- Change in or loss of nipple sensation
Your surgical risks are managed with meticulous surgical techniques. After surgery, you can maintain your risks at a low level by carefully following your post-operative care instructions.
What Can I Expect After Surgery?
Having multiple plastic surgery procedures at one time does shorten your recovery time from what it would be if you had each procedure individually. That said, the combination of procedures does require strict adherence to your post-operative care instructions. The primary one is to rest. After your surgery, you can expect to feel fatigued. You may want to sleep much more than is normal for you. This is good and necessary. When you sleep, your body engages in tissue repair. Your body also produces pain-relieving chemicals when you sleep, so don't push yourself to do too much too soon. You should walk short distances a few times a day (around the house) but must refrain from overexerting yourself. The doctor will discuss when you can resume your normal activities, including housework and exercise, during your post-op visits.
You will see Dr. Chiaramonte a few times throughout your recovery period. These visits will ensure that you are healing as expected. For the first week to 10 days, and possibly longer, you will take prescription pain medication to maintain optimal comfort. Even with the medication, you can expect to feel sore and tender in your surgical areas. If you've had a tummy tuck, you will be slightly stooped for a few weeks while your abdominal muscles and skin relax into their new form.
How Long Do I Need Off From a Desk Job After a Mommy Makeover?
It can take from two to four weeks to feel well enough to return to work, even a desk job. While you may feel quite well after two weeks of recovery, it is important to remember that you may grow tired more easily for six weeks or longer. Your physical activity will be limited for at least six weeks, which may affect how long you feel comfortable sitting at a desk every day. We suggest taking at least two full weeks off and also discussing a flexible return schedule with your employer.
What Are the Best Foods to Eat After a Mommy Makeover?
After surgery, the body needs protein and nutrients to heal and return to full health, so it’s important to stick to a balanced diet rich in the right things. Poultry, pork, fish, eggs, and lean red meat are all excellent ways to get your protein, as are plant-based alternatives like beans and nuts.
You should also include foods rich in Vitamins C and A, as they boost the immune system and promote speedy, complete healing. (Fruit options like oranges, mango, strawberries, and similar options are great picks.) Be sure to stay hydrated with plenty of water, as well.
What Exercises Can I Do After a Mommy Makeover?
You should plan on avoiding any sort of strenuous activity or exercise for at least six weeks following your Mommy Makeover procedure. However, once that time has passed and your body has had adequate time to heal, you can re-integrate light exercise options like following into your routine:
- Light-weight training
- Light elliptical machine activity
- Light jogging
- Stationary biking
Stay away from full-scale workouts, strenuous cardio options, weightlifting, and exercises that involve possible abdominal strain until you have a doctor’s approval to proceed. It may be a few months, depending on your unique situation and needs.
What Are the Signs of a Complication After a Mommy Makeover?
In most cases, Mommy Makeover procedures go very well, and patients make a full recovery with no issues whatsoever. However, as is the case with any surgical procedure, complications are possible, so it’s important to be aware of the signs.
The most common of these possibilities is infection. Possible signs of infection include fever, incision sites that look or feel swollen, pronounced tenderness, and red streaks near the incision site. Nausea, pus drainage, restlessness, and other flu-like symptoms may also signal an issue. Seek medical attention right away if you notice these or any other symptoms that don’t seem right.
How Soon Can I Travel After a Mommy Makeover?
Travel is not recommended for patients in recovery after a mommy makeover until after four weeks at the very least. However, many patients may need longer than four weeks to completely heal from their mommy makeover procedure. Before traveling, ensure that you are completely recovered from your surgery to decrease the chances of complications.
What Are the Long-Term Results of a Mommy Makeover?
Because a mommy makeover is focused on restoring the body to a youthful state pre-pregnancy, the results from the treatment can include:
- Increase in breast size and volume
- Repositioning of the breasts for a perkier, more youthful appearance
- Weight loss and toning in the abdomen area
- Lifting of the buttocks
- Vaginal rejuvenation
While results from the mommy makeover are not permanent, most results last the average patient longer than a decade, as long as a stable weight is maintained. Because the results from your mommy makeover may alter your appearance due to significant weight loss or weight gain, it’s important to keep your weight stable to enjoy the results from your treatment.
What Can a Mommy Makeover Accomplish?
Just as pregnancy impacts every woman's body in a different way, the ability to bounce back from these changes is different for every woman. Some people seem like they regained their pre-pregnancy figure with ease after having children, while others may struggle to counteract the changes to their body even though they have spent countless hours at the gym. A mommy makeover can help you put the finishing touches on your efforts in order to restore a youthful, beautiful appearance.
By customizing your mommy makeover treatment plan, Dr. Chiaramonte can address the unique changes that have impacted your body as a result of pregnancy. This is the best way to ensure all of your goals are achieved by your procedure.
Many women experience the following benefits from their mommy makeover:
- Restoration of their pre-pregnancy figure
