This patient was referred to our office by her primary care physician after complaining of severe back and neck pain due to her overly large breasts. Not only were they causing physical discomfort for her, they were also causing her breathing difficulties, so she decided something must be done! She contacted Dr. Chiaramonte for a complimentary consultation.
During her consultation, Dr. Chiaramonte explained that she had a condition known as gigantomastia, meaning that her breasts after surgery would be at least 3 cup sizes smaller than her current breasts. Removing this much breast tissue would create a blood-supply issue for the nipple and areola, so Dr. Chiaramonte recommended a free nipple graft which would cause her to lose the sensation in her nipples, but allow her breasts to be reduced to a proportionate size. Without undergoing the free nipple graft, her breasts would only be reduced by about a cup size, still leaving them pendulous and painful.
The patient decided to undergo a breast reduction with the free nipple graft so that her breasts would finally fit her body and her pain and breathing troubles would be eliminated. Following surgery, she received many compliments from people asking if she was losing weight! Most of her pain and breathing issues resolved within just a few weeks and when she returned for her follow-up visit 6 months after her surgery, she reported a clean bill of health!
