How Should I Prepare for My Tummy Tuck?

Maryland Plastic Surgeon serving Washington DC, & Virginia including Alexandria and Fairfax.

Tummy Tuck Alexandria | Maryland, Washington DC, VirginiaBefore undergoing tummy tuck surgery, we advise our Alexandria patients to prepare for the procedure by following a few simple recommendations.  Adequate preparation not only assists in the recovery process, it helps ensure your safety during the surgery.

Quit smoking: If you smoke, you’ll need to stop for at least two weeks prior to your surgery and remain smoke-free for another two weeks following the procedure. Simply cutting down your tobacco intake will not suffice. You must completely quit smoking for the duration of the recommended four weeks or risk complications a hinder the healing process.

Eat well-balanced meals: The weeks leading up to your surgery are not the time to begin a new, drastic diet. Since a tummy tuck is not a weight-loss method, you should already be at or near your ideal weight when you schedule your surgery. A healthy diet improves your recovery.

Make any necessary medication adjustments: Be sure Dr. Chiaramonte is aware of all prescription drugs, herbal medicines and other supplements you currently take. Certain medications, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and diet pills should be avoided for at least two weeks prior to surgery.

Prepare your home: Get your home clean and recovery-ready. You’ll want:

  • Easy-to-prepare meals and snacks
  • Plenty of movies, books and magazines
  • A bathroom chair  and a hand-held shower head
  • Ice packs
  • Lots of pillows
  • Loose, comfortable clothing
  • Plenty of moisturizer and petroleum jelly

You'll also need someone you can rely on to drive you home after the surgery and be available to help later if you need it. Ask a friend to stay with you for the first night if you live alone.
