Tummy tuck procedures are among the most popular services offered at our Maryland practice, and often the most misunderstood. Dr. Michael Chiaramonte is committed to helping his patients clearly understand the risks and benefits of every procedure he offers, including tummy tucks.
Here are some common myths associated with the tummy tuck procedure:
Myth 1: A tummy tuck will help me lose weight.
Fact: Although some fat and excess skin is removed during surgery, the procedure does not typically result in any significant weight loss. You will need to commit to a healthy balance of proper diet and exercise to maintain your ideal weight.
Myth 2: A tummy tuck will noticeably scar my stomach.
Fact: A tummy tuck procedure involves a single incision between the hipbones, but it is typically concealed below the bikini line, along the natural creases of your body, making it almost unnoticeable when you wear clothing.
Myth 3: Combining a tummy tuck with liposuction is very painful.
Fact: In some cases, Dr. Chiaramonte may recommend using liposuction to remove stubborn fatty deposits in conjunction with your tummy tuck. While both procedures can cause some discomfort individually, the combination of procedures will not render you motionless.
Myth 4: A tummy tuck will permanently numb my entire abdomen area.
Fact: As in any surgery, your surgeon may need to cut through nerves, and you may experience some localized numbness following your procedure. However, despite rare exceptions, numbness is temporary and feeling is restored once your nerves have repaired themselves.
Myth 5: Tummy tucks have a considerably high risk of complications.
Fact: Tummy tucks aren’t recommended for everyone, but for good candidates, the number of associated risks is comparable to that of most major surgeries. Dr. Chiaramonte will discuss your candidacy and procedural risks during your consultation.
