Board-Certified Plastic Surgeons In National Harbor Accepting New Patients Near Washington DC, Arlington, Fort Washington, Maryland & Virginia

Chemical peels (often called “chemosurgery”) can be used by Dr. Chiaramonte, Dr. Costeloe, and Alex Truong, PA-C to eliminate the top parts of areas of skin that have been damaged by age, sun exposure, or other natural factors. The skin will heal and generate new cells, a process that produces a firmer and younger-appearing countenance.

For exfoliation that is slightly deeper than a topical cream, many dermatologists recommend a chemical peel. It can improve many skin problems, such as acne and sun damage. Chemical peels can also stimulate collagen, thereby reducing mild acne scarring and actually tightening the skin. This non-invasive procedure has proven very effective in helping lined, UV-affected, and aged skin. It can be given to your whole facial area or to just certain locations, such as your mouth or brow. What People Say About Us!

Dr. C and staff are awesome. Have recommended him to anyone who knows my path and asks about it. It’s the only place I would go to for any of the services offered.

Is There Downtime After A Chemical Peel?

There isn’t much downtime in terms of recovery from our chemical peel treatments in Maryland and DC. However, you may want to take a few days away from work and social engagements. This will depend on the type of peel that you select. If you choose to have the lightest chemical peel, you can go right back to your normal activities, minus getting sun exposure. If you choose a medium-grade peel, you may be advised to stay out of the sun as well as the gym. Exercise, or any physical activity, that causes you to sweat can irritate the skin. While your skin is actively peeling, you may need to avoid potentially harsh topical products, such as retinol and certain acids. Your provider will advise you regarding aftercare based on your unique peel.

How Much Peeling Should I Expect After My Treatment?

The amount of peeling you experience will depend on the depth of your peel. Light chemical peels may not cause any peeling at all. Your skin might feel slightly rough and you may notice some flaking. This doesn’t mean that your peel isn’t working. You’ll still benefit, regardless. In general, the deeper the treatment, the more peeling you can expect. It’s important to follow your aftercare instructions and not rub or pull on the peeling areas. Allowing the skin to slough off naturally will yield the best results with the least amount of irritation.

How Should I Prepare For My Chemical Peel?

We want you to achieve the best results with minimal side effects. Before your chemical peel treatment in Maryland or DC, you can prepare your skin for stress-free exfoliation by avoiding sun exposure and products that tend to irritate the epidermis. Exfoliating ingredients like alpha and beta hydroxy acids should be avoided. Serums and medications like Retin-A should, as well. You also should not undergo other professional treatments, such as laser resurfacing, waxing, or tanning for at least one week before receiving a chemical peel.

What Type Of Chemical Peel Is Right For Me?

Your provider can help you choose the best peel for your needs. The following may help you familiarize yourself with the various conditions our Maryland and DC peels can address:

  • Mild hyperpigmentation and sun damage. This concern can be handled well with a mild, alpha-hydroxy peel.
  • Rough skin. Lighter alpha-hydroxy or glycolic acid peels can smooth a mildly rough surface. These ingredients may also reduce or remove some skin growths.
  • Fine lines. A medium peel with trichloroacetic acid (TCA) may be ideal for fine lines and minor wrinkles. A series of peels scheduled weeks apart may be needed in some cases.
Age spots. Trichloroacetic acid or a stronger phenol peel may be ideal for age spots and more pronounced sun damage.
  • Acne. You may benefit from monthly light chemical peels to help reduce oiliness and to help manage acne flare-ups.
  • Acne scars. The right peel for acne scarring depends on the severity of the scar. A series of light peels may gradually reduce acne scars, as might one or two stronger peels.
