If you are looking for a do-it-all, all-in-one facial treatment to rejuvenate your face and restore your youthfulness, a facelift in Alexandria may be right for you. A facelift is designed to defy some of the most common and visible signs of facial aging—such as skin sagginess, drooping facial tissues, and the emergence of fine lines, wrinkles, and folds.

Our board-certified facial plastic surgeons, Dr. Chiaramonte and Dr. Costeloe, perform the procedure in-house at our clinic. For more information about our popular facelift procedure or to schedule your consultation, call our office today.

What Is a Facelift?

A facelift, medically known as a rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic procedure that lifts and smooths facial skin folds on the cheeks and jawline to give an overall younger facial appearance. Here is what our facelift procedure can do:

  • Smoothen the brow area
  • Reduce overall facial aging by lifting and firming facial skin
  • Fade away the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and skin folds
  • Define and tauten the appearance of the chin and jawline
  • Lift and firm the skin on the neck (if you get an accompanying neck lift)

When Do I Need a Facelift?

Most of our patients in Alexandria, men and women alike, explore their facelift options in their mid-forties. It is typically during this time when the signs of aging start to become more pronounced, but are not yet irreversible. This procedure is fairly common for patients entering their fifties and sixties as well. However, there is no right time to get a facelift—your time is the right time. You can consider this option when you feel that the signs of facial aging are reducing your self-confidence and impacting your quality of life.

Many of our patients start thinking about the impacts of facial aging in their late thirties. These patients are typically interested in exploring cosmetic options, but may not be ready for a complete facelift. We invite our younger patients who are interested in facial rejuvenation but are not ready to obtain a facelift to explore other alternative procedures and non-surgical treatment options.

Your Initial Consultation For Your Facelift

The initial consultation is where your journey begins. One of our highly-trained plastic surgeons will expertly assess your unique facial aging concerns and needs. They will discuss how best to perform the facelift, designing a personalized surgical strategy that prioritizes your safety, wellness, and cosmetic goals.

During the initial consultation, your Alexandria plastic surgeon will review your complete medical history to ensure you are a good candidate for the facelift procedure. They will review the entire facelift surgery from start to finish with you, reviewing the procedure’s risks, downtime, and recovery. Finally, they will also recommend lifestyle changes to facilitate an optimal recovery. For example, you may be advised to quit smoking.

What To Expect During Your Facelift Procedure

A facelift is performed at our clinic under anesthesia to ensure your wellness and comfort. Usually, the procedure takes about six hours. We strongly recommend that you schedule the entire day off and arrange for a ride home.

Your Alexandria facelift surgery will be based on the safest procedure determined by your plastic surgeon. Typically, the procedure begins with a concealed incision in front of the ear, extending upward behind the ear. Once the incision is made, the surface facial skin is separated from the deeper tissues of the face. At this point, your plastic surgeon will precisely remodel and contour the deeper tissues of your face. Finally, the excess skin is removed, and the remaining skin is tightened—leaving you with a smoother, tighter face.

Your Alexandria Facelift Downtime and Recovery

The recovery time for a facelift involves two to three weeks of structured rest. During this time, do not engage yourself in strenuous physical activity, including going to the gym or vigorous exercise. You also should not wear any makeup, and be mindful about sun exposure; always wear SPF. You want to rest your facial muscles as much as possible to let them heal. You may also be advised to take special care of your hair, including avoiding bleaching, dyeing, or chemically treating it. You also may be advised to only use certain kinds of soaps.

Following your rest period, you will be allowed to return to work and engage in most of your daily living activities. Your results may take a couple of months to fully reveal themselves.

Should I Combine My Facelift With A Neck Lift?

Here is where many of our well-intentioned patients go wrong with their facial surgery. One of the most obvious signs of facial plastic surgery is when your face has been restored with the mark of youthfulness, but the rest of your body (particularly your neck) has not.

We generally recommend combining a facelift with a neck lift for uniform results. This will ensure that the new smooth, firm look of your face will extend to your neck for uniform youthfulness. Combining facelift and neck lift surgeries rather than pursuing them individually offers many benefits for our Alexandria patients, including lower risk, lower recovery time, and faster results.
