This 40-year-old patient from Waldorf, Maryland had undergone gastric bypass surgery in 2002. She had lost 124 pounds since her surgery and had been at a stable weight for nearly a year. Since her weight loss, she experienced rashes and rubbing of the loose abdomen skin when she wore clothes, causing her significant discomfort. She was very aware of the problems her loose skin was causing, and she was looking for a plastic surgery solution that would resolve the problems quickly and permanently. After an examination, I decided the patient was an excellent candidate a panniculectomy (a surgical procedure to remove the apron of fat and skin that hangs below the belly). I also performed revision of the upper abdominal scar and liposuction of the mid-body. The patient showed no signs of a hernia or any other types of conditions that would need surgical attention. The procedure first required me to place small incisions on both sides of her abdomen for the liposuction. A second, transverse incision was made on her abdomen to remove the scar. A third incision above the pelvis removed excess skin. The two incisions on her abdomen are most commonly known as an inverted “T” incision. After her cosmetic surgery in Maryland, the patient recovered well, experiencing minimal edema that resolved quickly and little scarring. Her fast recovery period resulted in a pleasing new appearance and new outlook on life.
