About Vein Therapy
Spider veins or varicose veins are unsightly disorders that may occur singly or in groups on various areas of your body. Spider veins are small, dilated veins that form web-like or sunburst patterns on your legs and face. Varicose veins are larger dilated blood vessels that are sometimes raised above the skin. Though not dangerous, both conditions may cause discomfort, and larger varicose veins can be quite painful.
Vein therapy, often performed on an outpatient basis, can be effective in 50 to 90 percent of cases. Treatments include:
- Sclerotherapy, in which blood vessels are injected with a solution that causes them to shrink and disappear
- Laser vein removal, in which the veins are zapped with a laser, causing them to burn away
- Ligation, in which the veins are tied off
- Complete surgical removal of the affected blood vessels
