The recovery period is incredibly important, as it can hinder or deliver the results you wanted to achieve. Our plastic surgeon in Fairfax recommends you follow these five tips for a smooth tummy tuck recovery:

Mind Your Eating

Before getting surgery, your skin needs to be strong in order to heal quicker. The best way to do that is through proper nutrition. It is essential to eat healthy and follow your diet, and include foods such as:

  • Salmon
  • Spinach
  • Broccoli
  • Chicken
  • Apples
  • Oranges
  • Strawberries

All of these foods are rich with nutrients, vitamins and minerals. A healthy body before surgery is a healthy body after surgery!

Hydrate

Your body requires a significant amount of water to remain hydrated. Staying hydrated will help your body naturally flush out toxins and keep your skin cells clean and replenished. We suggest drinking at least 2.5 liters of water a day leading up to your surgery and afterward. This can reduce your chances of complications.

Avoid Smoking

If you do smoke, we highly recommend that you stop smoking for at least two weeks both before and after your tummy tuck procedure. Smoking increases your risk of complications after your surgery. This is due to the chemicals found in cigarettes that are detrimental to your body and skin. These chemicals have the potential to obstruct proper blood flow, which is key to a successful surgery and a speedy recovery.

Take a Walk

For the first couple of days following your procedure, you'll be instructed to get plenty of rest. But once you are able to engage in light activity, we recommend taking walks every day. Doing this promotes blood circulation (which minimizes blood clot formation) and it keeps you in a good mood. Of course, we suggest starting out slowly and working up to longer more vigorous walks when your body is ready for it.

Stay Positive

Like we mentioned above, staying positive is key to a successful recovery. To keep your spirits up, you can go outside to catch some rays, go for a light walk, watch your favorite movies and shows or try reading a book.
